PUBLIC VOCABULARY

A public organization may need to offer its vocabulary to the general public. The vocabulary helps people to understand the activities of the public organization. The best way to bring the organization’s vocabulary into public use is to offer the vocabulary as an online service. Kielikone has a long time experience of co-operating with the public sector and of distributing their vocabularies as online services.

EXAMPLE: Finnish Environment Institute and Finnish Meteorological Institute

Step 1: A need to publish a vocabulary to general public

The Finnish Environment Institute has its own multilingual vocabulary, the environmental dictionary, Endic, in printed form. They noticed that the printed Endic vocabulary only reached a fraction of their targeted audience and wanted to bring the vocabulary into the use of a larger target group. The Finnish Environment Institute thought that the environmental dictionary Endic is a useful tool for scientists, students, translators and others whose work has an international dimension. They were already using Kielikone’s MOT dictionaries and learned that their own vocabulary could also be brought to the general public as a similar online service.

Step 2: Deciding the service

The Finnish Environment Institute and Kielikone discussed the layout and the features of the service, and how the visual identity of the Finnish Environment Institute could be brought into the service, i.e. by using the Institute’s colours and logos. Localisation was also discussed. They decided that the service would be offered in three languages: Finnish, Swedish and English. Kielikone and Finnish Environment Institute signed an agreement and set up a project. Kielikone built the vocabulary accordingly and performed thorough testing. Before launching the service, Finnish Environmental Institute gave final approval for the service.

Step 4: Using the service

When the project was completed, the online public vocabulary was brought to the general public at http://mot.kielikone.fi/mot/endic/netmot. The Finnish Environment Institute and Kielikone made a press release about the service.

Step 5: Updating the service

The Finnish Environment Institute and the Finnish Meteorological Institute have a close cooperation. Finnish Meteorological Institute has its own vocabulary, the meteorological dictionary MetDic. The Finnish Environment Institute invited the Finnish Meteorological Institute to bring the MetDic into a public online service. A project with Kielikone is started in which Metdic is brought into the Endic vocabulary service. After this update, everyone can use both online public vocabularies in the same place.

As the next step, the vocabularies could be offered as a mobile web service to the general public. The content of the vocabularies could also be updated according the needs of the institutes. These could be realised as a project with Kielikone.
